Typically, the summertime months means the start of We Walk PHL, a program that establishes walking groups in the beautiful parks of Philadelphia. This year, due to COVID-19, We Walk will become a virtual experience! The program has Ambassadors whose role is to model healthy living practices and promote the safe use of parks.
The benefits of walking are endless. Regular walking routines can help you meet the American Heart Association’s recommendation of 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week. Walking is accessible for all ages and abilities due to the fact that it’s a low-impact exercise. And best of all, walking is FREE! Although playgrounds and athletic courts currently remain closed, parks and trails in the Philadelphia area are open!
Tips for exercising in Philadelphia’s parks and trails:
- Limit park visits to 1 hour if possible
- Go at less popular times of day
- Keep at least 6 feet apart
- Walk alone or with your household
- Don’t stop to chat or gather
- Learn when, why and how to wear a mask
- As always, practice proper trail etiquette
As a reminder, social distancing is very important, especially in public parks and trails in the area. Do not use parks if you are exhibiting symptoms. Follow CDC’s guidance on personal hygiene prior to visiting parks or trails. Share the trail and warn others of your presence as you pass. Be prepared for limited access to public restrooms and water fountains. Observe CDC’s minimum recommended social distancing of 6’ from other individuals at all times.
