Yoga is a great way to stay balanced physically, mentally and spiritually. The tripod of health indicates that focusing on strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular / aerobic fitness contributes to that balance. Some types of yoga cover all three! There are many styles of yoga that accommodate every fitness level, from gentle beginners to vigorous advanced. If you are new to yoga, or have physical limitations or accommodations to consider, discuss these with your yoga teacher prior to class so they can incorporate appropriate modifications for you. Chances are, you are not the only one, and other students will be grateful to learn several approaches to a pose, so don’t be afraid to speak up!

Tim Wagner, Founder and Executive Director of Roots2Rise, further discusses the benefits of yoga:

“In its simplest of forms, yoga is moving your body from shape to shape and breathing while you do so. Your breathing is the most important thing. The movements into shapes (poses) up and down, back and forth, right and left, twist or not to twist are interchangeable and are always sequenced with your inhales and your exhales.

Yoga is movement with breath. Mindfulness is breath with awareness. The combination of the two are magical.

When you slow down and put your attention on your breathing you create awareness of yourself in a new way. Not only do your calm down the activity in your brain, you also begin to understand the physical space that you occupy. It’s about slowing down, pausing to reflect on you, giving yourself time to connect with your body and being aware of who you are and how important your actions are.”
