Roots, Rock, Run 5k is a GrassROOTS Community Foundation community engagement activity. On June 4th, GrassROOTS in collaboration with Chairman of the Board, Tarik “Black Thought” Trotter of the The Roots and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, will lead a community 5k walk/run.
GrassROOTS goal is to create an interactive, fun, neighborhood-based health promotion event that reclaims economically depressed neighborhoods and make them inviting health spaces. They also seek to bring awareness of the importance of physical activity and healthier living as well as raise funds to support programs and organizations that make healthier living a priority for impoverished women and girls.
Unlike a lot of races, the Roots, Rock, Run 5k is a FUN!! The day includes musical acts, face painting, a dance contest, health screening, food vendors and lots more. The program this year includes three musical acts: reggae cover band Jah People, youth sensations Summer Valentine with DJ Beauty and Devon. DJ Scotty Nevers returns as the host DJ.
Do you know what else is cool about this event? Our very own featured Philadelphian, Coach Leslie Marant has offered a free 10-week training program for youth and families of Anna Lane Lingelbach Elementary School in order to prepare them to run the race. This group of youth will lead the race next to Black Thought. Is it any wonder why we love her? Check out her story here.
We hope to see you out there on June 4th!
