Philly Powered is a part of Get Healthy Philly, the Division of Chronic Disease Prevention for the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, and is designed to promote everyday physical activity particularly among adult men and women who are seeking to live healthier lives.
Get Healthy Philly is funded by city, state, and federal partners including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Illnesses related to obesity and smoking are the leading causes of death and disability in Philadelphia, yet studies show eating healthy and being physically active, along with being smoke-free, can reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
Get Healthy Philly’s goal is to make healthy choices easier by:
- Creating safe spaces for physical activity in communities, including walkable and bikable neighborhoods and active transit.
- Ensuring that all Philadelphians have access to healthy and affordable food (locally grown where possible).
- Reducing the consumption and marketing of sugary drinks and junk foods among children and adults.
Get Healthy Philly brings together government agencies, public schools, community groups as well as the private sector to ensure all our residents live healthier. As increased physical activity is just one of the elements of a healthier lifestyle, this initiative also oversees the following programs:
- Food Fit Philly provides information about raising awareness about the links between nutrition, physical activity and health; promoting healthy planning, active design, bicycle and walking; and developing health policies and programming for all Philadelphians.
- SmokeFree Philly provides information, tools and support to help Philadelphians and their loved ones quit smoking. Since launching this campaign, Get Healthy Philly has reported an 18% and 30% reduction in smoking respectively among adults and youth.
